Common Accidents and Injuries

Thousands of people are hurt in car accidents every year; that being said there are certain types of injuries that seem to recur more than others. This article will discuss the most common types of car accident injuries that happened more often than others. With new inventions this has resulted in increased vehicle safety. Unfortunately, yearly thousands are harmed because of car accidents and these people suffer injuries that range from minor to catastrophic. It must be noted that the most common car accident injuries are often the result of the most common types of car accidents, which are rear end and T-bone collisions. A rear end collision is whereby a leading vehicle is usually stopped in traffic either by a red light or stop sign and the vehicle following it crashes into it, the following vehicle is typically travelling at a slow to moderate speed. Upon impact the driver or any passengers in the leading vehicle are thrust forward and thrown back in their seats. Depending on a number of factors such as:

  • The severity of the impact
  • The positioning of the headrest
  • Whether the occupant is wearing a seatbelt
The most typical injury is whiplash and a range from mild stiffness and soreness of the neck and back to serious damage to the musculature and discs of the spine. However, common injuries associated with rear end collisions involve front seat occupant’s impact on the steering wheel, dashboard, windscreen and objects in the vehicle which can result in injuries to the head, chest and knees. In addition, when a vehicle’s airbags are activated during a rear end collision, the front seat occupants can suffer burns from the propellant used to inflate the airbag. Rear seat occupants are thrust forward into the back of the front seats and as a result suffer injuries to the upper and lower bodies. In all these cases the severity of the injuries will depend on the size and weight of the occupants, the force of the impact, the use of a seat belts and the proper activation of airbags. Another common type of car accident is a T-bone accident. This is whereby one vehicle is struck at a 90 degree angle by another vehicle approaching from the driver’s or passenger’s side. As a result there are certain injuries that are more common than others with regards to a T-bone accident. When the impact is severe the occupants seated in the direct path of contact are likely to sustain serious injuries such as broken bones, damages to internal organs and head or brain trauma. Occupants that are seated on the side of the vehicle that is not directly struck may be injured in the same manner as occupants in a rear end collision. In addition, all vehicle occupants are at risk of injuries associated with cuts from broken glass. In addition, to physical injuries a common form of injury in psychological injuries. These can range from mild to serious and include anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder.
